5 Reasons Why It’s Important to Wear Your Natural Hair in its Afro state | Coils and Glory

At the workshop I conducted this by weekend, I shared some points on why it'due south important for more Black women to wear their hair in its Afro-textured state and to wear it out loud and proud.
Some of  the points I came up with are as follows:

ane. A True Representation of Us

While I was living in Prc. I had a lot of people asking me if my hair was fake or real. Although a few Chinese have seen Blackness people on Telly and even on the streets, well-nigh believe that the straight weaves that they encounter on Black women is our real hair. So, when they see me walking on the street with my afro puff, twist out, twists and what not, they automatically assume I was wearing a simulated. Celebrities such as Oprah, Beyoncé, Michelle Obama with straight pilus are not really showing the "outside" world  what our hair really looks like.

two. Minimal discrimination between u.s.a. and the "other" race

People will only criticize what they don't know and aren't used to. Information technology's a shame that we go along to let them dictate "appropriate" hairstyles for us to the indicate that we have to ship our own child home for wearing her pilus in an "unacceptable" hairstyle. Just if more of the states become to job interviews, dates and other functions with our hair out in its kinky coily state, I feel there will be reduced tension between u.s.a. and the "other" race.

iii. Eradication of Slave Hair Mentality

Those of u.s. who follow Black hair in the media must have heard of Sheryl Underwood's statement about kinky pilus. Perhaps yous've also heard about the little girl at an Oklahoma school who was sent home because Afros and locs are also distracting? It is this slave mentality that 's still causing many women to be ashamed of their hair to the point that they have nothing positive to say virtually their God-given characteristic.

4. Noesis, Empowerment and Self Love

Knowledge is power and it is the empowerment that we gain from this cognition that will truly set united states complimentary from the slave mentality which many of us notwithstanding have. And if we could get rid of this mentality, we'll be able to dear our hair in its natural texture without the need to alter its structure or always on a hunt for a product that will assist us "manage" our hair.

5. No need to wear other people'south hair
If you've seen the documentary "Good Hair" by Chris Rock, I'm sure y'all're aware that the "human hair" which y'all paid hundreds of dollars for were sacrificed to some questionable gods. Too, did you know that some of those pilus were secretly cut off from other women's hair equally they were sleeping or watching a motion picture at the cinema?

Personally, I stopped wearing "man hair" weaves subsequently watching this documentary because I refused to take office in the craziness. I was besides enlightened by the motion-picture show because information technology really made me call back and inquire myself why a Black adult female like myself has to pay superlative $$ for packs of stolen/sacrificed INDIAN hair, when I'm not Indian. I also knew that wearing hair that was sacrificed to some unknown gods cannot be spiritually right and so I refused to have function in such sin. At present, I guess constructed weaves are okay since they were manufactured in a factory. Nevertheless, I programme to completely eliminate wigs and weaves from my pilus wardrobe.
